WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING
September has been another massive month. I’ve made solid progress on the dining table build and uploaded 14 videos to Patreon. That’s a lot of videos in one month!
Now, I know I say this about almost every project, but this dining table has become one of my all time favourite builds. Not for the usual reasons though. I feel like I’ve learnt more through this piece than ever before, largely thanks to all the interviews I’ve recorded with those incredible designers. I’ve taken something unique from each of them and worked it into the design of this table. Honestly, I think it’s my best design yet. By no means is it showing off all the different skills and techniques I’m capable of (which is good for YouTube). But the actual point of this piece is to keep it refined, and ensure that every design choice serves a purpose.
Another reason this build feels so special is knowing that my family and I will be using this table for many years to come.
Back in June, I shared that I was starting this designer interview series, and it’s wild to think that just three months later I’m about to release interview number nine out of ten. This weekend I’ll be sharing my chat with Australian designer and maker Nathan Day, and the following week I’ll wrap up the series with Jory Brigham’s interview.

THIS MONTHS FAVOURITES
![]() Favourite Tip Dry fitting dominoes can be a bit of a pain sometimes, especially the big dominoes. They fit tight and are difficult to get back out without marring your work. | ![]() Favourite VideoMy favourite video this month has to be the one where I finally revealed the leg design for the dining table. I’d been sitting on that design for weeks, sketching, re-sketching, second guessing myself, then starting over again. It honestly drove me a little mad. To be honest, I still wasn’t completely sure about them until I shared the video. The response I got back made me realise I’m definitely on the right track. Check it out HERE |
![]() Favourite MomentI think seeing the dry fit finally come together has to be one of my favourite moments this month. I’m sure a lot of you can relate that everything leading up to that point feels a bit uncertain. You’re never quite sure if the proportions are spot on or if everything’s actually going to fit the way you planned. The dry fit is when you find out if your vision holds up in the real world. Thankfully, in this case, it looked exactly the way I’d pictured it in my head. I guess the only downside to a successful dry fit is knowing you now have to pull it all apart and glue it together… which is usually when everything turns to shit. |
Whats Going On With Patreon
We hit a new record this month with 1,300 paying members and over 4,600 free members. It’s pretty incredible to think that I wasn’t even on Patreon a few years ago, and in that time we’ve grown into one of the biggest woodworking channels on the platform.
A huge thank you goes out to all of you for the support. Patreon has given creators like me an alternative way to earn a living without relying too heavily on sponsorships that can sometimes limit creativity or pressure you to rush a build.
I’m incredibly grateful to everyone who has signed up, and I don’t take your subscription lightly. I know you’re spending your hard earned money, and it’s my responsibility to create the best woodworking content I can by building the best pieces I’m capable of while sharing every single step along the way.
I have a lot of ideas for the future and I can’t wait to share the journey with all of you.
Like I said earlier, 14 videos were released this month alone and thats not slowing down. Theres a tone more to go on this dining table and Im looking forward to bring you all along.

What’s Up Next
The dining table build rolls on and I’m getting closer to the finish line. Next up, I need to refine the final shape of the legs and then rout out a precise recess in the tabletop for the legs to sit into. It’s a step that always feels a bit nerve racking because there’s not much room for error, but it’s also one of those moments where the whole design really starts to come together.
Once that’s done, I’ll be moving on to the bench seats, which I’m equally excited about. The benches will share the same design language as the table, so they’ll feel like part of the set rather than an afterthought.
Meanwhile, I’ll be working on editing the YouTube version of this build. This video will be a little different from my usual builds because I’ll be weaving in snippets from the designer interviews. Throughout the process, you’ll hear words of wisdom from some of the incredible designers I’ve spoken to and see how their insights have directly influenced my decisions for this dining table. I think it’s going to give the whole video a richer narrative and a deeper sense of purpose behind the design.
I’m really excited to share all of this with you. I hope you’ve been liking these newsletters and finding them as enjoyable to read as I find them to write. If you haven’t already, please subscribe so you don’t miss the next updates.
Thank you and I’ll see you next time.
Nick
